This background note first highlights greenhouse gas concentration levels compatible with 2°C (section 2), the issue of whether we are committed to cross 2°C because we are committed to cross 400ppm CO2eq concentrations (section 3), the advantages of focussing on this centuries’ peaking instead of long-term stabilization levels (section 4), and the global emission implications of having a likely chance to stay below 2°C (section 5). Section 6 briefly mentions uncertainties and section 7 concludes.
